GBM antibody

Alternative names, keywords

Glomerular basement membrane antibody, anti GBM

Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Test indications

Antibodies to GBM are primarily directed towards the non-collagenous domain of the alpha 3 chain of type IV collagen. Since this type of collagen is found predominantly in glomeruli and alveoli, the presence these directly pathogenic antibodies is associated with rapidly progressive glonerulonephritis and alveolitis (Goodpasture’s syndrome). Anti-GBM antibodies may also be found in some patients with ANCA positive small vessel vasculitis, usually with anti-MPO antibodies.

Test information

The test is performed by a quantitative ELIA assay.
