Requesting restrictions have been lifted, however please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation:

  • there may be extended turnaround times for some tests, and
  • a minority of tests involving manual procedures and/or high-risk samples may continue to be restricted (these include ESR and glandular fever screen).

New revision (v2.2, 17th September 2020) of instructions on sending samples to the laboratories. Most of the changes relate only to clarity and wording but there is an important change to how samples are submitted for patients with previous infections of COVID-19 - samples from patients with a previous diagnosis of COVID-19 do not need to follow the enhanced samples submission guidelines if they were diagnosed over 28 days ago.

Restrictions on beta-2 transferrin (for ?CSF-containing fluids) have been lifted - a concurrent negative SARS-CoV-2 result is no longer essential, however it is requested that testing is delayed in patients who are extremely unwell with COVID-19.

We have been informed that the following referred tests are no longer available due to the manual nature of the testing and the types of samples involved:

From Monday 16th March, samples for for JAK2 mutation, CALR mutationMPL mutation testing are being sent away to King's College Hospital. This is to free up capacity for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
